Navigating your way through social situations and dealing with people is the fabric that holds society together. If your business involves people then social skills are essential to your success. The book How To Make Yourself Unforgettable by Dale Carnagie Training lists 5 social skills that are vital to success with people:

Learn To Relax in Any Social Situation

People can sense when someone is nervous, scared, filled with anxiety. On the other side of things people can also tell when someone is confident and full of energy as well. The things about any of these states of being is that its contagious. So take a deep breath and do your best to relax. Monitor and change any negative mental chatter in your mind and turn it into positive and you will be perceived as cool and confident.

Ability To Listen

Most people don’t really know how to listen to someone when they are talking. They think they know but if you want to be a good listener you must focus on what they are saying. WAIT for them to finish speaking and then answer. Even if you think you know how the conversation is going to end wait for them to finish. Also don’t be doing something else while someone is talking to you because its rude. If you absolutely have to be doing something while the conversation is going on then apologize if appropriate for being slightly distracted.

Empathy & Genuine Interest

Empathy is the ability to “feel” what the other person is feeling. When you empathize with someone you are showing a genuine interest in what they have to say and they will be more open to you. If they are in a situation that you have never been in don’t pretend to empathize, because people can see right through that.

Building and Maintaining Rapport

Rapport at its basic level is “i am like you we understand each other.” There are entire books and seminars written on building rapport with people so I am just summarizing how to build rapport with a person or persons. The other 4 social skills are of course key to helping you build rapport however there are other things you can do. People like people who are like themselves. Which is why great speakers and leaders will practice something call mirroring and matching. Whether it be their body movements, voice intonation, or rate of speech mirroring and matching is a valuable tool in building rapport. One warning about this, don’t COPY them. If she crosses her leg then you may cross your arms. Be subtle about it because if someone thinks your copying them you will be losing rapport. Also DON’T ever copy their accent, or if they have a stutter as they will think you are making fun of them.

Maintain Appropriate Eye Contact

Some people have difficulty with this one because they tend to stare. Have a relaxed “kind” or “concerned” look depending on the situation in your eyes when you look at someone. Usually break eye contact every every 3-5 seconds so its not perceived that you are staring at them which will make them uncomfortable.

Master these 5 basic social skills and you will be among the top people in your field.

So what is an expert? What makes someone say, “that guy is an expert.” According to Brendon Burchard an expert on making people experts it takes 4 things to make you an expert.

Watch CNN or any news channel when they interview a so called “expert” regarding a situation. They will cover 4 things that cement their status as an expert in the eyes of the viewer.

The following is a random news clip I grabbed off of youtube about the Japanese nuclear plant explosion that happened awhile back.

1. They Tell You What To Pay Attention To:
Some of the metal cans have burst and that is letting some of the radioactive material out. Broken glass on the building exterior was caused by an explosion, possibly a chemical explosion

2. They Tell You What This Means
If its caused by a problem with the core we will see high levels of contamination during the tests.

3. They Tell You How This Works:
Testing contamination levels and the different kinds of contamination.

4. How It May or Will Turn Out In The End
Further complicating factor or major contamination

Even though this had just happened and the expert didn’t have much information he was still able to sound like an expert by going through a number of “what if” scenarios.

Now lets bring that over to your business and apply it to prospecting and recruiting because people want to follow people that are experts. Lets apply it to the Numis Network gold/silver opportunity.

1. Tell Your Prospect What To Pay Attention To:

The key thing you should pay attention to with this opportunity is that we are marketing a product that everybody wants and needs which is MONEY.

2. Tell Your Prospect What This Means:

What this means is that our product is not paper money but rather gold and silver. Specifically Numismatic Silver & Gold Coins.

3. Tell Your Prospect How This Works:

Simply put our coins are museum grade quality coins released by the US govornment that historically and consistently outperformed the growth in value of precious metal Bullion coins.

4. Tell Your Prospect How It Will Turn Out In The End:

A 1997 Silver American Eagle that is graded perfect at MS70 has a retail value of $500, a bullion coin of the same year would be worth a fraction of that amount ($20 or so).

You don’t have to go in order, just make sure you are integrating the four key elements that make up an expert.

If you have any questions or comments leave them bellow or fire me an email if I can help in anyway.

I just started my own home based business that has to do with collecting high value silver and gold assets. I won’t get to much into the business but if you are interested in earning a nice little side income from home you can go here for a complete business overview.

Now the most important thing with any business is actually finding qualified targeted prospects to talk too. As my blog isn’t fully established and I don’t want to wait for leads from article marketing traffic to come in I decided to purchase some “opportunity seeker” leads from the internet.

I get hundreds of leads a month that are a few weeks old emailed to me daily. These leads are people that are looking to make extra money online and have filled out an opt in form on a landing page.

All of the top income earners know that finding people to join your opportunity is strictly a numbers game. As long as you are speaking to qualified people who want to earn extra income its only a matter of time before you start getting results.

So my target is to call 50 people a day. Some of you will say “WOAH! 50 people a day!”

Honestly guys this only takes 90mins at the most. You will get a lot of voicemails a few wrong numbers and of course some people will answer the phone.

Just do the following:

Ask them if they are interested in earning a side income from home?

Get their permission to email them some information.

Ask them whats going on in their life that they want to earn extra money?

Thank them for their time and setup a follow up time to answer any questions they may have.

Thats it! Your essentially getting permission to send them some information and your website will do all the explaining.

Now of course you can’t control how many people signup to your opportunity but you CAN control how many people you contact. That is why I am setting a goal of contacting 50 people per day NOT signup 5 people a week because I can’t control that.

So thats 300 dials per week and 1200 dials per month! Don’t forget ALL of these people I am calling REQUESTED more information about making more money from home.

If you want to make a 6 figure income doing a couple hours of work per day isn’t to much to ask, is it?

When I bought this book it was because I wanted a “pick up and read anytime” book. Don’t get me wrong this is one of those books you can pick up and read for 10 mins but its so much more than that.

This book is written and organized in such a way it almost takes you on a journey of what its like to become a millionaire.

It starts off with Principles for “What It Means To Be A Millionaire” continues through to “Believing In Yourself” then “Taking Action” and finally “What To Do Once You Have ‘made it’.”

Here are some of my favorite principles from the book:

Never Compare Your Wealth To Others – pg 57

“While it is tempting to look to others to guage your performance, your best measuring stick is in fact, yourself. The truth of the matter is that someone, somewhere will earn more or invest better than you. If you fixate on beating others or being beaten, you’ll never give yourself a chance to celebrate when you have accomplished something truly incredible in your own right.”

Make Your Internal Voice The Loudest In The Room – pg 96

“When you embark on your path to wealth, you will inevitably come across naysayers. People who are threatened by your blossoming positivity and successful mindset will tell you that you are impractical, or that your efforts are a waste of time. The best way to combat this is to never argue and fall back on that positive state of being you’ve worked to create for your self.”

Follow Through With Your Plans – pg 142

“All the planning in the world will not get you an inch closer to your goals unless you actually follow through with them. So, after you have crafted a plan for yourself, make a formal commitment to following it.”

This review cannot do this book justice. It is a very easy and fun read. The important thing is to actually incorporate this principles into your life!

The previous article I wrote on Cold Calling explains how to make initial contact with a targeted lead that you either generated from your website or bought from a lead company.

There is an old saying that goes, “the gold is in the followup.” And its true, following up with your prospect increases the likely hood of having a new person join your business by 70%, than if you only make contact once.

How and When to follow-up is really the key. Now of course this is going to be different for every industry and business. I am specifically referring to internet direct sales.

Timing: People need to think about things and most importantly UNDERSTAND what its all about. Compensation plan structures can be a bit complex at time. Give your prospect appropriate time to absorb. I usually call them back after 2 or 3 days.

My initial prospecting call I make sure to mention, “it’s going to take you an hour or so to go through the material so take your time over the next couple of days to go through the information.”

The prospect KNOWS at some level your going to be contacting them so they won’t be caught off guard when you follow up.

Before you pick up the phone make sure to get in the proper mindset as discussed in previous article about if your contacting targeted leads then they WANT to be called. This should get you enthusiastic to pick up that phone and make contact with them, especially since you have already chatted with them.

The Follow Up Call:

“Hi John its Ethan giving you a call back regarding that information I sent you a couple days ago, did you have a chance to look it over?”

If they say “NO”
“Well John were you serious about making that extra $2000 a month working from home on the internet? Well how about you take a look at the information when you have time and get back to me. You have my contact information. Thanks for your time.”

Unless they pull out a really good excuse like they were in the hospital or something then don’t waste to much time with this person. If they can’t be bothered to view the information you probably don’t want them on your team anyway. They just won’t do anything.

IMPORTANT LESSON: DON’T CHASE PEOPLE!

If they say “YES”
“Thats great John. Can you see yourself making that $2000 extra a month we talked about?”

“Now John do you think you have an extra 6 hours a week or more to work on your business if you chose to get started?”

“John do you think you could have a simple conversation just like we did and send some emails? Honestly thats really all there is to the process. There is no selling, I basically call people and see if they might be a fit and they decide for themselves. Its a very simply and effective method because the website explains all the nitty gritty details.”

“John did you have any questions about the program that you need answering?”
After you have answered questions ask:

“John are we ready to proceed with starting your business for you today?”

At this point I STOP and don’t say anything.

Your closing skills can usually help here but lets be honest, people either want it or they don’t. If they have seen the information and know its real they have all the information they need to make a decision. DON’T PUSH!

Some will simply say SIGN ME UP but most have questions. Your job is NOT to sell but to inform. Never forget that.

The key to making alot of money in this industry is to repeat this process many many times. Your going to get alot more no’s than yes’s so be ready for that. Its part of the process. The more people you talk to the more people you will get joining your business and the more money you will make. Simple.

I will write future posts on how to question and read people more effectively but for now just stick to the basics and they will serve you well, I promise.

As a direct sales marketer I spend alot of my productive time calling leads that have been either generated from my website or that I purchase from various sources. Knowing how to do this successfully is where you will make the most money.

Before you even pick up the phone you need to get into the right frame of mind. If you are getting targeted leads, which you should be, then these people WANT to be called. They WANT to earn extra money from home. If you go in with this attitude it will increase your confidence and allow you to get enthused about this whole process.

Believe me, I have so much fun calling people. At first it was a bit awkward but now its just fun.

Alot of people try and do these big elaborate interviews over the phone. I personally think this is a mistake because lets be honest, the people we are contacting may join our business and everything you say and do will influence them.

If you call someone and do a big elaborate phone interview you could have the greatest business in the world but that person is going to be thinking, “wow this is a pretty cool business but I don’t want to do all that talking just to make it work, I better pass.”

Instead I keep my calls to under 2 minutes.

“Hi, is John there?”

“Hi John, this is Ethan giving you a quick call from Canada. John you recently expressed an interest about making some extra money on the internet while working from home and I just wanted to get your permission to email you some information, is that ok?”

They will say YES or NO.

If they say NO: So you wern’t looking for a way to make some extra money on the side from home?
(if they say NO then thank them for their time and hang up)
(if they say YES continue on)

If they say YES:

I recently decided to lead a more minamalistic lifestyle. For the last month i have sold or thrown out loads of stuff that I would have never thought of doing before.

Reduce Clutter
I had over 300 DVDs which I rarely watch. Let’s be honest, DVDs are dieing and outdated pieces of technology. So before I end up with junk I decided to sell them and make a little money while I still could. Over the last 10 years I put $5000 into that collection but sold it for $300. Selling it hurt the most but honestly I don’t miss them at all now.

I sold my 37″ and 27″ LCD TVs because they were displays i simply didn’t need.
I used them exclusively for video game consoles. Instead I now have a dual 27″ display monitor setup. When I want to play xbox I simply switch the input on the monitor instead of having a whole other TV taking up space.

Dual Desktop or XBOX Saves Space & Money

I also got rid of various pieces of furniture I simply didn’t use or could go without using.

I am fortunate to have a storage room downstairs because I can just throw a lot of the clutter down there until I have time to sell it / throw it out.

Go Digital

Books
With the invention of the Kindle and iPad there is no reason to read dead tree books anymore. Like my DVD collection it’s a dieing technology. Of course there are going to be many that complain they find reading on a computer screen hard.
The iPad and Kindle are not “computer screens” and you need to try out an iPad or Kindle for a week and then reassess your attitude.

Say No To Dead Tree Products

I personally can read the iPad for hours but some say the back lit screen is bad for your eyes. If your in the “I have sensitive eyes” camp thats fine because then you would get an e-ink reader like the Kindle. E-ink is non backlit and actually prints the text on the screen. You can adjust the font size as well if you need to see more closely.

I eliminated about 40 books by finding them digitally online. I backed them up in several places just in case something happens to my iPad however. I have about 15 dead tree books still in my office because I didn’t want to put them in storage / donate them but they take up a fraction of the space.

Also for traveling I have my entire library with me at all times. As before if i went on a trip i would only have room for a couple books. Not only do i have my library with me at all times but i have all of my email, my writing, pictures, and music.

Movies
I do own about 16 BluRay movies which I may or may not sell. However before i sold my dvds i made a list of them and downloaded the ones I “couldn’t live with out”. I personally recommend IceFilms.info if you want a HUGE selection of movies that download without a fuss.

Music:
I know a lot of you “like the case” but you don’t REALLY use your cds all that much do you? You rip it to your iTunes and put it on your iPod and throw the case in the corner. THE ONLY CD I physically bought was Katy Perry’s California Gurls because it smells like cotton candy.

mmmmm Katy

Also iTunes keeps a record of what you bought and you can download copies of your music anytime you want if you lose your iPod.

So Productive...

The Standing Workstation
I am a huge advocate of the standing workstation since i converted a few months back. Its healthier for your body as well as more productive. You can read about standing workstations here. As far as minimalism is concerned the standing workstation uses very little space as can be seen in the picture below.

I love how much space i have in my office now. Its a very calming and productive environment to be in.

Cooked Food Is Murder...Well No but...

Food
This may be a bit hardcore for some but i am switching to a fruitarian diet. Its just as it sounds which means I’m only going to eat 100% fresh fruit diet. I’m not going to go into the health benefits here with you now. What this means for minimalism is that a weeks worth of groceries fit easily into a large bowl.

I go to the store about twice a week to buy fruits but this diet is extremely cost effective, space effective, and most importantly healthy.

There you have it. This is how i am or will be leading a minimalistic lifestyle that should make me ultra productive as well as ultra healthy.

If you have any questions or comments please post them below as I am always interested in hearing other peoples opinions.

What we focus on is what we experience
Our lives are the sum of our experiences

I realized this fact the other day because I had 3 days off of work due to a holiday and noticed I was very very scatter brained. What I mean by this is the Friday seemed to go by in a flash and I didn’t really accomplish anything.

Sure I read a few chapters in my book and watched a movie but I really didn’t do anything. The following day I decided to monitor my attention. I found that I would jump from thing to thing with out really finishing anything.

I would check my email, read half of a webpage, get up and go into the kitchen, stare into the refrigerator and close it again. Before I knew it, it was 5pm. I stepped back and thought…wow this isn’t good.

Sure its nice to have a day where you do nothing sometimes but this seems to be constant.

At work I am mindful of what I am doing because I HAVE to be. I am getting paid to do a job that requires results.

Why should I not apply that to my free time as well? I mean this is the time that should in part be spent learning new things, mastering an existing skill.

We all have a large list of things we want to get done…mine include:

Learn another language

Learn to play piano

Build passive income streams

Learn how to draw

I have a lot more but this list has been the same for years and I haven’t really made any headway on it. I can’t think of any good reason why either.

The reason I HAVEN’T done anything is because of scattered attention. So I vowed to do a LITTLE each day on at least TWO of these things.

Learning Another Language: I signed up for a Busuu.com account and did ONE French lesson. It only took 20 mins.

Learn To Play Piano: I played the ONE song I know (Amazing Grace) for the piano a few times just to make sure I could still do it.

Build Passive Income Streams: I brainstormed with my friend about possible income streams and made some notes of things I want to develop further.

When all was said and done I had only spent an hour on all three of these things. The thing is that time seemed to just flash by and further more I felt a sense of peace and contentment.
The key from what I have been reading in many different sources is to do a little bit at a time and never try and tackle everything at once.

I am going to explore this focused attention thing some more and see where it takes me. Will update soon.

WOW the iPad 3 is here! For many they couldn’t care less but for Apple people this is a moderately big day. The only real improvements worth mentioning are:

Quad Core A5X processor chip

If your using graphically intensive Apps you will notice that they are snappier and smoother. Pocket Universe augmented reality function runs very smoothly! My friend games a lot on his iPad 3 but until better controls can be worked out i’ll stick to my PSVITA. Infinity Blade does look really good but again its a mediocre game at best. If you ARE one of those people that only care about eye candy then you will be happier than a tornado in a trailer park.

Improved rear camera 5MP with 1080P Video

I still maintain that taking pictures and video with an iPad is like taking pictures with a clipboard. Apple, as always, has tweaked the camera app interface to be more intuituve. My only complaint with the 1080P video is the fact that its only 1080P @ 30fps not 60fps. Ho-Hum, many will say but professionals demand 60fps or they won’t even look at you.

That being said if you are a professional just buy a standalone camera which does 1080P @ 60fps and go to town.

High Resolution Retina Display (2048 x 1536)

This is the big one, the MAIN reason I picked up the iPad 3! MOST people will not notice a difference from the iPad 2 to the iPad 3. Its like when you try and show people the difference between BLURAY and DVD Quality, most people just stare blankly at the screen and say, “it looks the same.” There is nothing wrong with these people they just have different priorities in life and will probably be happier with the iPad 2 knowing that they saved $100 or more on their purchase.

For the people that WILL notice you don’t want to look at anything else. Infact my 27″ iMac Screen is burning my eyes as I type this blog post.

OK so basically the pixel density on the new Retina display is 4x as dense. Its all very fancy and technical but I am not going to bother explaining it here because Apple does a good job of doing that themselves. Just go to: http://Apple.com/iPad

The Retina Display will be excellent for everything but especially:

Reading:

I never knew text could look so crisp! The commercials don’t lie. Dare I say it, its better than RL.

Graphical Applications:

iMindMap HD, Pocket Universe, Infinity Blade. All of these applications look brilliant on the new Retina display. Coupled with the Quad Core A5X makes for a very eye-candy experience.

Videos: Now because the resolution is so high if you play standard def stuff its going to look worse. Again, most people won’t notice. The solution is to increase the bit rate when you encode your videos. However for applications like Netflix I fear you may have to settle for mediocre. Criticizing the iPad 3 for making low res videos look worse is like criticizing Lady Gaga for wearing silly outfits, thats just the way it is.

The iPad 3 is a little heavier, about 50 grams, but it is noticeable. Especially if you use it for reading your hand will become a little sore sooner.

I bought my iPad 3 and then sold my iPad 2 for $320 on the internet. Total upgrade cost approx $270 after tax. A small price to pay to be technologically current.

Remember, if you embrace a minimalist lifestyle you to can enjoy the latest toys with out feeling like your wasting.

I’ve considered myself a minimalist for a couple years now and have been working towards a lifestyle that is based less on consumption and more about sustainability and contribution. I came across this website the other day and the author has a nice little creed that sums up what a minimalist thinks like:

A Minimalist’s Train of Thought

Less money spent means more money saved

More money saved means the longer you can live in financial peace and security

Financial peace and security comes from owning less

Less stuff owned means less to carry around, move or have to travel with

Less responsibility for your stuff also means less maintenance and more time

The more time you have, the more relaxed you will feel

The more relaxed you are, the less you will care about stuff

If you care less about stuff, it means you’ll care less about image

If you care less about image, you will care more about experiences and memories

If you care more about experiences and memories, you will be happier with less

If you are happier with less, you’ll never want or need for more

The less you want or need for more, the more you will feel free
